Key Developmental Milestones (6-8)

At this age, children are building more reading fluency, comprehension, and independence. With the right encouragement and support, they may start reading more independently and your reading routine may involve them reading to you, as well as you still reading to them.

They may begin to show more interest in specific topics and simple genres such as fairy books, animal stories, non-fiction, etc. This is where simple chapter books expand their reading world, and as they move towards eight, they begin to enjoy longer and more developed stories.

This is a good age to introduce more complex themes around topics such as friendship, personal responsibility, and curiosity. It’s also an age where they might enjoy reading simpler books by themselves, but listening to more advanced stories with you.

READING LISTS:

There are so many good books at this stage, but some classics that remain popular are:

Matilda by Roald Dahl (also great at this age are Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, and James and the Giant Peach)

The Secret Seven (also The Famous Five, and The Magic Faraway Tree) by Enid Blyton

The Worst Witch books by Jill Murphy

Charlotte’s Web by E B White

The Winnie the Pooh books by A A Milne

Paddington Bear by Michael Bond

Many books in this age group have been adapted into films and/or TV series. It’s a great idea to encourage reading the books first and then watching them afterwards.
