FRANKIE BEST HATES QUESTS by CHRIS SMITH.
A brilliantly fun book, with a heroine who will appeal to boys or girls. Frankie and her brother are thrust into an adventure… but it’s not a quest. At least, Frankie insists it isn’t because she HATES quests!

HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE by JK ROWLING
Loved by children and adults, this is a wonderful book to read together or for your child to begin to read alone. It’s another great ‘book before movie’ recommendation. I would also suggest that you remember the series gets darker as it continues, so you may want to delay reading until they are eight so that the rest of the series isn’t too much for them.

THE WORST WITCH by JILL MURPHY
One of my favourites growing up and still popular today. Mildred Hubble is a great heroine and the magic is simple and fun.

THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE by C.S. LEWIS
A classic and a firm favourite for so many. It never seems to get old and kids today love it as much as ever. It’s a great book to start practicing the ‘book before movie’ rule - i.e. read the book before you watch the movie.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON by CRESSIDA COWELL
Well, of course I had to include a book with dragons! And this is such a great story full of humour, adventure and a wonderful hero, Hiccup Horrendous. It’s another book that is now a movie so another great chance to encourage your child to read.

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY by ROALD DAHL
Another classic and another that continues to be loved by children. It continues to have all the ingredients that make a book a favourite: a well-developed hero, a great plot, and lots of fun and fantastical elements.
