Key Developmental Milestones (9-12)
This is an exciting age for young readers and one that many of our most beloved children’s books cater for.
Critical thinking and deeper comprehension come into play at this stage. Children can read and understand more sophisticated plots and explore more advanced themes like identity, justice, and problem-solving. Elements of danger and consequences tend to ramp up in books for this age range, and main characters are usually aged 12+.
Fantasy, Mystery, and Adventure books are particularly popular at this age and are a great way for children to understand the world around them. Longer chapter books become more accessible, and children are likely to become more attached to certain genres and authors and want to read independently.
This is a great age to talk to your child about the books they are reading and get them to explain the plot, what they love, etc. It can also be an age where you can enjoy films based on books too - my recommendation is to always read the book before watching the movie! A lot of the books aimed at this age group are brilliantly written and are just as great to read as an adult, so why not join in and get your child to recommend books to you - they’ll love it.
