Affirmations for New Mums

Motherhood is a wonderful experience… but it can also be overwhelming, challenging, and make us doubt ourselves. All of which is quite normal. Being a new mum is hard and comes with a really steep learning curve, especially as most of us these days have very little, or even ZERO, experience with babies.

Affirmations can be really useful to help develop a strong and positive mindset which helps us feel more confident as a new mum. It’s a technique used by celebrities, top athletes, and successful business people all over the world. And to be honest, being a mum is a lot like being the CEO of your family so why not use techniques that help the world’s best!

WHAT IS AN AFFIRMATION?

An affirmation is a short sentence (or 2) that uses positive words to tap into our subconscious mind and make us feel more motivated, confident, and capable. The best ones contain the 3 P’s - they are Personal, Positive, and written in the Present tense. For example, someone who is feeling nervous about doing something new might choose the affirmation: I AM BRAVE AND EMBRACE NEW CHALLENGES.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

Affirmations work by tapping into your subconscious and creating new patterns of belief, overriding the false stories we tell ourselves. Because the reality is that most of us spend a lot of our time thinking negative things about ourselves, e.g. I’m lazy, I’m not good enough, I’m a bad mum, I’m fat, etc. and the more we tell ourselves these stories, the more we begin to believe they are true. And that is how we end up sabotaging ourselves. We tell ourselves we aren’t good enough, then we start to truly believe that is the truth AND then we act from that space. This might look like not going for a job we want, not speaking up in a meeting, constantly comparing ourselves to other mums, etc.

When we cultivate a practice of positive thinking we can change our thought patterns and begin to act from a more optimistic place. As the famous Henry Ford quote goes: ‘Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.’ The most successful people know that the number one key to success is believing you can do it. Everything starts with your mindset. Including being a great mum.

HOW TO USE AFFIRMATIONS?

It’s important to keep your affirmation simple and feel connected to it. It should create a positive emotion, one that feels real to you - we’re not going for fake or toxic positivity - one that resonates and helps you feel good. Once you have an affirmation that makes you feel motivated, confident, and/or positively focused on something it is good to repeat it to yourself several times a day. You might try 10 times in the morning and 10 times before bed. You can say your affirmation out loud to yourself - lots of people like to do it in front of a mirror - or you can write it down, use it in meditation, or even in your yoga practice. If you keep your affirmation short and simple it is easier to remember. You might choose to create an affirmation to help you feel less anxious and that you can repeat as part of a daily routine, but also anytime you feel anxious feelings arise.
