I have a dream, a vision, of daily yoga, the sun warm on my face, the white sand beneath my toes, birds in the trees and me looking fabulous in a pair of leggings and vest top.

The reality is that yes, I love yoga…I just rarely get around to doing it!  Even though I know that after a workout I feel so much better, lengthened, alive, present in myself and my soul, able to breathe…when the alarm goes off in the morning I would rather dive under the duvet for another few minutes, inevitably stumbling my way through a shower and dealing (often badly) with the noise and stress of trying to get the kids ready for school all whilst still trying to wake up properly.  And once my day gets going there really isn’t much time to fit in a yoga routine unless falling over a pile of toys and landing with my legs in the air counts!  As for the rest of my dream...well, living in a small UK town in January means no warm sun, no white sand and as for leggings and a vest top...well maybe not just yet!

Oh, how I envy those people who spring out of bed at 5am and start their day with a few sun salutations, a healthy smoothie and then glow their way through the rest of the day all shiny and happy.

Well, I’m going to try and be one of them…for 10 days anyway and see whether or not it makes a difference in my life.  This is the first in one of my mini-projects for 2013 and I am hoping it may kickstart my yoga habit and at the very least get me in better shape for my upcoming month in New Zealand

The main problems I envisage are:

1                     I am not a morning person and the fact that here in the UK it is dark until about 8am makes getting up early pretty cold and miserable.

2                     I am not a morning person and my husband is no early bird either so leaving him snug and cosy in bed is going to be hard whilst I go downstairs in several layers to keep warm

3                     I am not a morning person and my dog thinks that yoga = playtime so I have to figure out how to keep him out of the sitting room whilst I try to contort my body into strange and interesting shapes…without his help!

4                     I am not a morning person and anytime I do try to get up early some sort of invisible alarm goes off alerting my youngest to the fact that mummy is up and therefore it must be playtime – perhaps I can get her and the dog together!

So, these minor obstacles apart, I am determined to get my yoga goddess on for the next few days and see what happens.  As I mentioned in a previous post i am always setting myself big goals but this year is different hence the 10 days of yoga instead of the annual attempt at 365 - of which I usually manage about 5!

Starting next Monday (21st January) for 10 days (not including Saturday and Sunday - come on, it's the weekend!) I will attempt to do a different routine (lasting from 20-60 minutes) each day first thing in the morning (about 6am – 5am is just too early for this English rose in the winter).  My aim is to try out different types of yoga as well as explore different methods of doing 'home yoga' and discover some new teachers.

I will be posting my progress on the blog and Facebook and giving links to the routines/resources that I am using so if you want to yoga along with me you can and do share how you are getting on – I will need lots of encouragement and am happy to be your cheerleader too.

So, Namaste my lovelies and fingers crossed for a good start on Monday!

P.S.  If you want to get started with me on Monday then my first routine is: 4 sun salutations followed by the Warrior yoga workout below (total time is about 35 minutes)

Love the mini-project idea. :D And a tip for the dog? Maybe your yoga is his or her Kong toy stuffed with treats time.

Your comments about yoga is me all over. I love it, feel unbelieveable when ever I put in the time adn have a regular routine, but it never seems to happen or does for few months and then stops. So I am in. I will do the 10 days with you. However it is a little easier for me to get up - we are in summer, very warm and the sun is up. I will send some warmth to you when I am up and yogaering!

Woohoo! So nice to have you on board Jules - normally I would be unbelievably jealous of your lovely sunshine but as I will be enjoying it myself in 2 weeks time I don't mind quite so much ;) Still, as I am snowed in today some of your warmth would be very welcome. Thanks for stopping by and here's to 10 days of yoga and cheering eachother on x

That's funny. I just started doing Morning Yoga with a YouTube Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRsC1YdXqOc) and have been doing it for three mornings in a row now.
I usually try to squeeze it in even if my children are up and it worked well so far. :) They even tried copying some of the moves. I know it doesn't really get you into the perfect Yoga mood if children are running around you but it's better than nothing.
I wish you all the best with your Mini Project and can't wait to follow and cheer you on!! Enjoy! :)

Hi Halina, thanks for stopping by and sharing the link. Well done on your three mornings of yoga, and so great that you fit it in around your children - so sweet that they copy the moves :) Keep it up and let's cheer eachother on x

Oh Jo I'm so with you with wanting to pull the covers back over and lay in bed for another 10-15 minutes! I am not an AM person, but feel better when I get up early......so that's what I try to do during the week and then allow myself to sleep til I wake up naturally on the weekends.....which usually is by 8am or before.......and if I don't do yoga at least 3X a week, my back lets me know! Even if I only do 15 minutes, it makes a difference for me.............best wishes with your 10 days of yoga!

Hey Gina, mmm duvet and bed - such a lovely place to be :) I'm with you on the back issue - my back gets pretty bad when I don't do yoga and yet I still struggle to get round to it - oh those old habits die hard don't they, continuing on even when we know they are not good for us x

This is awesome! And I'm so with you on not being a morning person and wishing I was what I at least envision morning people to be like. With the yoga and smoothie and all that. I did something similar last spring where I woke up before work and walked in the morning darkness/cold. I definitely felt better, but it only lasted a week.

Hi Cassandra, I had a lovely email from a friend this week saying that even after many years of doing yoga she still has to 'trick' herself into doing it...so maybe morning people are just better at the art of self-persuasion :)

Hey Jo, I am one day behind - I got a migraine on Sunday and I was wiped out yesterday. But I have done the day 1 workout and about to look at day 2. This kids joined in with me for some. I am so hoping that getting back into yoga I can balance out my vata (ayurveda dosha) and get a good sleep again - it has been too long. Thanks for being the inspriation for me to get back into yoga.

this post made me laugh aloud Jo - i'm the same, I have the same vision. I hope your challenge is going well (I'll catch up slowly over the next few days!), and I just wanted to share what I do: 10 minutes of yoga every day. It's not perfect, it's not as much as I want to do, but it's a realistic amount that I try to do before breakfast...but if I get up late, I can do it just before lunch or just before tea...but the 10 minutes is a lot easier than trying to jump right in with 90 minutes outside (brrrrrrrrrrrrr!) as the sun rises on the beach! (especially as I live 2 hours away from the nearest beach!)

Although I did do some outside yoga in the snow on Sunday - snowga! My dog was looking at me like I'd lost the plot, and every time I did some kind of bend, I had to throw one of her toys! It was fun as a one-off, but it's not going to catch on with me! x
